Refractive errors of the eye

The most common eye complaint is blurred vision. This is often caused by a refractive error in the eye (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, etc.).

In the case of nearsightedness (myopia), distant objects are blurry, but near vision is usually good.

In the case of hyperopia, we primarily see near objects more dimly, while distance vision is usually good. Due to the adaptation of the eye, it is diagnosed less frequently, although uncorrected hyperopia is often the cause of headaches and fatigue. It can be treated with a “plus” (magnifier, convex) lens.

Astigmatism can cause distorted vision both at distance and near. It can also be combined with myopia and hyperopia. It can be corrected with a cylindrical lens.

Presbyopia usually occurs after the age of 40: when looking up close or reading, the image becomes blurry, and "you have to hold the newspaper further and further away." Reading glasses can help with this problem, the strength (diopter) of which depends on the eye's basic refraction.

Refractive errors can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or various surgeries. Based on the values specified in the order, glasses can be made in almost any optician.

The same is true for contact lenses. We do not perform refractive surgery (correcting refraction) at our Center (for now). Our doctors provide detailed information about the surgical options that may be considered, which vary from person to person (locally or nationally), and one of them regularly performs such procedures himself.

It is important to know that changes in the refraction of the eye and blurred vision can also be symptoms of other, more serious eye diseases!
